Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons Review (NeoRizer)

Literal hot garbage.
It's the memberberry edition of Double Dragon... or should I say Devil's Dare? :/
If you hated Devil's Dare, you'll hate this game, plain and simple... The mechanics are absolute jank trash and even on the easiest settings, they will hinder you from enjoying the game. Everything is clunky in this... the jumping, the attacking, the hit recovery... you'll get infinite juggled by enemies and basically die, without the use of cheat engine and hacking your cash, forget ever enjoying this game... you'll feel so defeated and frustrated the further you get, it only gets harder as you progress. You could spend the entire game saving up money and have it all get wiped away in a matter of seconds.
I didn't die at all until I had to do the 4th mission, then it was just cheap death after cheap death. I died about 6 times on the very final boss just from him attacking me once. If he lands any attack you're basically toast, this game is just a bunch of trash mechanic nonsense.
I'll give this game props for remixing some cool tunes from Return of the Double Dragon/Super Double Dragon which is one of the best soundtracks in the franchise next to DD2. There was some Double Dragon III peppered in, very little Double Dragon II, which is a shame and a bunch of classic stuff from DD1. They pulled a lot of tracks from that dumpster fire that was Double Dragon IV which is unfortunate because that game's music was garbage.
Either way, this game is absolute trash for a $30 price tag, it's just unfair garbage... This dev basically just threw a Double Dragon coat of paint on top of their garbage coding from Devil's Dare and that's about it.
The roguelite elements really butcher subsequent playthroughs as well... you'll feel like you're going backwards when you start a new game up. Thankfully you only have to beat this game 4 times through tops and then it's over. I'm assuming they expected you to beat the true final boss with one of the cheap boss characters like Okada because Jesus H Christ, he's ridiculous if you get within melee range.
I would say buy it on sale if you're a hardcore DD fan, like at least 50% off, I wouldn't even pay $15 for this honestly... it's a fairly piss poor Double Dragon entry. I just can't understand why every game made today has to play like absolute garbage... it's like these games are made for someone with Asperger syndrome... I don't even get it.
If you MUST play this due to your own personal FOMO mental illness. Do yourself a favour and make sure you buy the blue lightning bolt to increase your characters speed immediately. If you don't get a speed increase, you'll be sorry by the end of this game... it's almost unbearable without it. Also the SP recharge skills are a must if you expect to tag in and out on the fly because the game is literally conditioned around you doing this... as soon as you get hit you basically have to tag out and play as your partner to save yourself from getting instant death combo juggled in the air.
The art style is subjective, I think it looks OKAY for what it's trying to do which is be all chibi and super deformed, so there's that, if you hate it, you hate it. IMO I would have preferred a much more serious version of DD with a more realistic art style, less cartoonish and a much darker plot.... also, good game play mechanics wouldn't hurt.
This game feels like you purposefully have to slow down your own reflexes because the recovery frames are so jank that you'll end up mashing buttons and your character will just sit there doing nothing. Don't expect much from this tripe and don't listen to people who say this is a good game, it's a pile of shit... and it's terrible for a DD game... like legit, this is on par with Double Dragon III for the NES... absolute cancer.
Double Dragon II still holds the torch for the best Double Dragon entry, plot wise and challenge wise. Super Double Dragon / Double Dragon Advance still both have the best game play mechanics in the entire franchise... they're just smooth and give the player so much freedom and control, this game feels like you have a ball and chain attached to your character at all times... it's just off and doesn't feel natural... also the running mechanics are fucking garbage... like you can run left and right but you can't run in a diagonal or roll upwards or downwards... this game is lazy AF in design.
DD Gaiden is a step backwards and I can't help but feel this developer tried to re-invent the wheel but really they just copied bad code from a bad game to save on resources; Then went and slapped a brand name IP over it so they could jack the price up three times what their original failed project was worth...
*sigh*
This shit is so depressing.
EDIT: Upon further playing this mess, I managed to save up enough tokens to unlock Okada and The Mysterious Warrior and honestly, these two characters break the game entirely.
Their special attacks legitimately allow you to ignore all of the garbage ass mechanics and just spam special attacks over and over... The Mysterious Warrior alone is just an unstoppable power house and Okada is a good long range back up character for cheesing boss fights at a distance.
This still doesn't make me like this game, in fact, I hate it even more knowing that the two main characters Billy and Jimmy both suck ass and two of the hardest bosses in the game are the most broken characters to play as... pretty pathetic honestly... I came here to play a Double Dragon game, not some shitty openbor fan game.
