Final Fantasy Review (Capricorn Anomaly)

Basically Final Fantasy 1: Quality of Life Edition.
As someone who grew away from these kinds of JRPG games over the years and thought I'd never touch an old school Final Fantasy game ever again, I can say this is worth the money. Idk about 12 dollar worth it, but I think it's worth it lol. I've also played the older version on PS1 (Final Fantasy Origins) and beat it back in 2005 during my teen years. If the pixel remaster was like that version, I most likely wouldn't touch it.
For me personally, the x4 boost you can enable to both the XP and Gil in this pixel remaster make the game far more enjoyable so that I'm not mindlessly grinding battles for hours on end. Not to mention the ability to turn off random encounters at will, so gone are the days of running into a battle literally every 2 steps, taking forever to get anything done. And good riddance I say, it was a nuisance (personal preference of course).
It also added a minimap to the upper right corner of the screen that shows you where you are as well as marks any place you've been to and even marks where you left your boat and airship which is super helpful. I don't recall any of that being in the Origins version, though I haven't touched it for about 19 years so I could be misremembering.
Only real problem I have with the game is that since there's no quest log it means you literally have to memorize everything you do. For example, if there's a place that needs a special object to open a path to advance the game and you go to some other random dungeon to get said object but can't remember for the life of you where you needed to go to use that special object then you're just gonna be wandering around for hours trying to figure out what to do next, and the only real clues you get are to talk to people in the towns.
There is zero guidance in the game (the old Final Fantasy games from the PS1 era were always like this from what I remember), so if you're used to modern RPG games then there may be a chance you won't like this at all. Some people enjoy this and call it "Not holding your hand". I call it silly. I don't mind putting the work in to get stuff done, but at least make a log of what locations need what so that I'm not wandering around like an idiot.
All the more reason turning off random encounters is enticing. Imagine being lost and you can't remember where to go next on top of running into a random battle every 2 to 5 steps. Yeah doesn't sound like fun does it? lol. Becomes monotonous and tiresome, wears on you mentally. Of course you can always look up help on the internet nowadays, but that's cheating, at least it is until you realized you spent 2 hours running around lost, then suddenly looking up some help via YouTube doesn't sound so bad lol.
Other than that it's a good game. Bare bones old school Final Fantasy before the series started to get convoluted later on. I'm not sure if I'll ever touch it again as these kind of games just don't hit me like they used to in my teen years, but I do recommend to try it out at least once. I think it would be cool if Square Enix decided to completely remake the very first Final Fantasy with today's graphics and technology.
