Freedom Wars Remastered Review (Phoenix)
First off, I want to say I'm incredibly glad to have access to this game again. Freedom Wars is incredible, easily my favorite game on Vita, and the game itself seems to be just as good as ever. But, this remaster is very flawed, and needs.. a lot more work to really be considered acceptable.
As everyone else has mentioned, the text-to-speech voices on AI characters is absolutely horrible. Their voices are all annoying and they mispronounce words CONSTANTLY. I'd genuinely estimate like 5-10% of all words spoken by these TTS voices are pronounced wrong, and it's insanely irritating. In general, the new English dub (the original game did not have English audio for the record) is lackluster, TTS voices aside. The voice actors tend to sound awkward, although I think they're just inexperienced actors doing their best.
The game runs *horribly*, even on hardware that should FAR exceed its requirements. I have a recent i7 and an RTX GPU. I should not be having lag spikes in a PS Vita game. It doesn't even really look better than the vita version, higher resolutions, and higher res shadows, and anti-aliasing, but that's really it. They didn't entirely rework the graphics here, so I really don't understand why it hits lag spikes so much. Never seems to go past 30fps, either. And the graphics settings are *incredibly* lacking, well below acceptable standards these days.
And then there's the biggest issue with this remaster - Easy Anti-Cheat. It really doesn't matter what your opinion on EAC is, there's arguments both ways, but at the end of the day, it doesn't belong in a game like this, period. It's not competitively viable, it's not going to be played as an esport, it probably wasn't going to have very many cheaters anyways, and I personally theorize it's why most people can't start up the damn game. EAC, in my mind, is malware. It's a massive security vulnerability, and is just about the worst thing a game can include, I would rather have Denuvo. But even if you don't agree with me on that front - and I understand many don't, it still stands to reason that there are whole proper esports that get by just fine without kernel level anti cheat, and I really don't think we should stand for something like this. It doesn't belong here, and there are plenty of alternatives.
EAC alone makes me not feel comfortable recommending the game, and I'd suggest anyone still interested at least get it on console if they must, however, if you really want to get it on Steam, or have already gotten it and want to rid yourself of EAC:
Go into the game's files (Right click on the game in Steam, click "Properties...", Installed Files, "Browse...") and delete the "EasyAntiCheat" folder. Delete or rename "start_protected_game", and make a copy of "START". Rename that copy to "start_protected_game". Then, delete "installscript.vdf". If you've already started the game before, then you'll have to uninstall EAC in Programs and Features in windows. Otherwise, you're good to go. Note this will probably disable multiplayer, but I think that's a small price to pay for not putting your entire computer at risk.
This is a masterpiece of a game, and I'm glad to see it come back, but my god Bandai/Dimps, please. You can do better than this, I know you can, if you can dump endless amounts of cash into a new DBZ game every single year, you can put more effort towards a $40 remaster. It's not too late to fix this.
