House Party Review (richv68)

SAVE YOUR MONEY!! This game is and has been broken for a long time. This game suffers from a nasty problem in that it will run stable for hours of gameplay and then, for whatever reason, NONE of your saves will work. Every single character in the game (except you) will vanish, no doors in the house (which is the ONLY location in the whole game) will open and (in case you haven't read enough about the game) there's basically nothing to do in the game as this is a 100% story/decision driven game. Good luck doing that with all the characters you're supposed to interact vanished.
Worse, this problem is not new. Long ago I played the game, got stuck on the progression, and took a short break that turned long. When i came back I found this problem, and discovered that plenty of other players experience this, both though Steam forums and outside sites, like Reddit etc. So i deleted the game, reinstalled it and started from scratch another character (like other desperate players do, as there is apparently zero guidance from devs regarding this, afaik). No saved games in my pc remained, as I deleted them all; 100% fresh install. The game behaved fine, but after many hours of play, ALL of my dozens of saves got simultaneously bugged in the same way. Just overnight it happened. I got a normal save and logged off the game, then next day all went wrong. I give up now! In this game, saving and being able to reload saves is crucial, as the game is about testing behaviors and interactions and learning the potential consequences of each action.
Even worse is the fact that developers seem basically oblivious (or careless) to this, and their presence in forums (on Steam at least) is nonexistent. In discussions about this specific issue you can see no feedback from the devs, as opposed to games where you can see some posts about issues, perhaps not with solutions, but at least with a basic acknowledgement. The devs seem to only be keen about keeping milking the cow on a broken product, and adding color customizations that dont even work (at least on pc) properly while ignoring critical issues like this. Think about it: in this game there's no first person shooting, nor a touchdown to score, nor planets or forest to explore nor kingdoms to free, etc. I.e. the fun is not in the mechanics of playing the game and if your PC dies on you well, at least you played 3 quarters or killed 100 monsters. In this game there's simply you arriving to a rather strange party, and from that point all you do is go talk to one of the several characters at a time to progress the story, with an occasional object interaction that sparks a reaction from one or several characters. If you play your cards right you can see some explicit content with, you guessed, a specific character. That's it, that's the game. The fun is in the interactions with characters. Then imagine ALL the characters vanish from ALL your saves. Dozens and dozens of saves. All messed up. On two different characters, both nowhere near the end of the progression. So yeah, I give up.
So please, save your hard earned money. This is a broken game that apparently i will never get to see its ending as the developers apparently will keep adding decorations and tshirt colors and in the meantime me and many players would have to keep crossing fingers by restarting the game with reinstallations and new characters, just to see the game fail again, with no effort from the devs to even reassure the paying customers (us) that they intend one of these years to even bother beginning to look into this mess. This is one of the worst game bugs I've ever seen, as quite often bugs are annoying but the game remains somewhat playable. Not this case. The bug renders the game 100% unplayable but the devs keep adding colors to a broken game. So please don't reward this cynical negligence and save yourself from disappointment. It's not as if there were no other games on Steam, with many great games that actually work...
EDIT: Eventually, early in May, a developer tried to calm down angry posts about these issues with a "promise" that (and i quote) "very soon" a "potential fix" would come our way for those of us who simply cannot play the game. It's almost mid June and there's no indication anywhere on Steam that any fix or update is coming to this game. Last update was also from early May, not addressing these problems. Seems like the devs are still milking a broken cow here hoping that new cash payers fail to take serious game breaking concerns seriously. Be very careful how you use (or waste) your hard earned money (hopefully not on this broken trash of code).
