Jotun: Valhalla Edition Review (radical_chic)

This is a very tentative recommendation. On the whole I enjoyed the game and looked forward to playing it. However, it has some issues.
First, there are some actual Viking sagas less obtuse than this game. If you want a hint about what god powers are, what controls are, or what is going on, you'll have to consult a Steam guide, because this game doesn't want to tell you.
Second, Thora is slow. Sometimes this is a good game choice, such as in boss fights-it's all about perfect timing and struggling against impossible odds. Other times it's just annoying, like when you want her to haul ass across a level but she'd rather amble her way through dwarf town. Thora, maybe you died a dishonourable death because you're the slowest viking in Scandinavia.
Third, the fire giant has an annoying move where he pushes you into oncoming fireballs that is not telegraphed.
Fourth, it can sometimes be hard to tell where you are when you're behind something. You see a shadow outline of Thora, but you can't always judge if you're right up against the giant you're fighting or if you're actually several feet away from her. The reverse happens too.
Fifth, the maps are hit or miss. Some look neat and some can't really be read.
I still think this is a good game and that you should play it. The art is excellent, the sound and voice acting give the game an ancient and epic feel, the boss fights feel massive and consequential. One of the most interesting things about his game is which giants people say are the toughest. But it's also true that this game has a bunch of problems that you might not be able to get past.
