Kill Knight Review (WonderWhy)
Man, this game is seriously fun! The mechanics are insanely good. Although there are a few things I don't really like (I'll get to that in a bit), this game really brought bullet hell games back to life for me. The difficulty at the start is real, though—because the mechanics are a bit complex, especially when you're trying to learn everything at once. But once you're used to it and your muscle memory kicks in, it's like you’re on auto-pilot just watching monsters get wrecked while still feeling the challenge and pressure.
The Downsides
Buying Equipment: Collecting points is a grind. To get all the equipment, you’ll need to put in a ton of hours. For example, a weapon might cost 2500 points, but one run might only get you 100 points or even less. Sure, clearing a stage gets you more, but it's tough, you know. If it were that easy, the game would be over in an hour. And there are like 20+ items to collect, some even more expensive. Each run is also pretty exhausting, so grinding for long periods can get a bit much.
Art Style: I like the art style overall, but there’s just one thing I’m not a fan of: the design of the equipment, like weapons and armor. I was hoping for something more epic-looking, Cool weapon shapes, badass armor. Some weapons I don't even know what they are by just looking at them! You’ve got to buy them and try them in-game to figure out their abilities. Everything is too pixelated. Sure, you can kind of tell what’s what, but I feel like the design could’ve been better.
Music and Sound Effects: This isn't exactly a downside, more like a wishlist. I liked everything—the music and effects are solid and meet the standard—but the game’s way more fun than the music. I feel like if the tracks were more diverse or more intense, it’d be perfect. Another thing I’d love to see is voiceovers for the characters. It feels like something’s missing without it. Or even some combo sounds, like in Devil May Cry when you're chaining combos and you see that combo meter go up. It’d be awesome to hear something other than just the number ticking higher.
If you've made it this far, I know I’ve complained quite a bit, but trust me everything this game does, it does exceptionally well. It really raises the bar for bullet hell games, and you should definitely grab it.
