Lakeburg Legacies Review (Swift)
I loved the demo and was super excited for this game- like bought it immediately on launch excited.
And I am sad to say that I was very disappointed. The game made changes from the demo and also just showed itself to have a lot of very basic issues.
- when managing the buildings in the village there is no arrow to cycle quickly through them and so it means opening a building, closing out of the building, selecting the next one, rinse and repeat. and this can easily lead to some buildings being overlooked due to them being tucked away in cute corners- especially the criminal buildings.
- which, speaking of, the criminal buildings are just annoying. they eat resources but they do more than that. bc without them your village will die of disease/depression/atheism/etc. etc. unlike the other professions they cannot take on apprentices. which story wise is understandable. except mechanically it leads to problems. Because the other professions can mentor children those children will grow up to have higher stars by default in their jobs- which means better production etc. While the rat keepers meanwhile will always have to settle for someone with 2 and a half stars if I'm lucky with no guaranteed way to get a better person. Which is pretty bad because that means that this crappy employee who I cannot improve or do anything for is the deciding factor for the entire villages health. Like ????
And then the hospital/church/etc are late builds which those would actually do the jobs of disease/faith/etc ????
- another 'seems cool at face value but actually causes problems down the line' is the bisexuality of all the villagers. At first its like 'ok cool! anyone can marry anyone and they can have kids! neato!' except mechanically, again, bad! So a hetero couple produces a child that will carry on their genetic traits so you can in theory try to pass on only the desirable traits to create a super child. A gay couple meanwhile will adopt some random kid and will not pass on any of their traits. My top man with strong and beautiful went and adopted a kid with 2 bad congenital traits! Like?? It automatically makes a hetero couple more desirable from a management standpoint.
I feel like this could have been quickly resolved with just 'tindra used magic so mpreg is a thing'. I mean, she can already find all the hot singles in your area it seems like its up her alley.
- The filter and alert systems do not work properly. I had multiple times where it turned out someone was homeless and dropped dead on me despite them not appearing under the list of homeless characters or the house panel alerting me that they were homeless. This strikes me as a pretty fixable bug but was obviously frustrating.
- The filter really needs a 'clear all' button or even just a basic search. Once the village starts to get big it just becomes wildly unrealistic to scroll endlessly to the left which again leads to things being overlooked.
- It should really alert me when a kid ages up to 6 so I can drop them into an apprenticeship immediately.
- In the demo it made it seem like the castle was a goal to work towards, when in actuality I guess you get it before you get even livestock farms? Bc lol wat?? The castle just provides prestige just is just a magic number for 'basically useless' and it could tax people but again, 'basically useless' bc once you upgrade your buildings your good and bc you can get free villagers by marrying them into the village so that recruitment's ludicrously increasing costs don't even matter much. And it's also like a full fledged castle? I feel like it could be an upgradeable building that goes from small tower with walls to the extravagant thing it is. Which also, it should provide protection- not the theives guild.
And then just, the villagers don't feel like people. I can tell you about specific Rimworld pawns who were memorable for a variety reasons. Or kings in crusader kings. Or any other number of games in this veins. Hell, I had a favorite jester in darkest dungeon. I don't have a favorite in this game. These guys really do just feel like stats.
They don't complain when I move them from job to job, their interactions are simplistic and always make it sound like they just met eachother for the first time even when its like, a couple who has been married for 20 years. I can't do anything with them apart from spam greet and if they get mad at eachother and ruin the ambiance of the work place I can just hit the end relationship button to erase the whole thing because they are that inconsequential.
That guy? He is literally just '3 and a half star farmer who likes dancing'.
And then nothing bad ever happens? Like I got 2 random events. Both sounded scary, stuff about monsoons and storms... but all it did was give me more vegetables ???
So yea, i am very unhappy.
Theres actually more I could say but basically, go play rimworld.
Your people will actually be people.
