Mato Anomalies Review (afterthought.btw)
A bit of a hidden gem, in that if it were given more polish it could truly have sparkled. I enjoyed my time in the game, which is why I'm happy enough to recommend it, but I'd be hard pressed to name one single element that could be said to make it stand out. Probably what I liked the most was the cyberpunk setting and story, and yet even with that there is an obtuse nature to the storytelling which I suspect is compounded by the translation process that I felt kept me at bay from really soaking it all in. Equally, the world feels a bit lifeless at times, as though the budget couldn't quite stretch to the vision they had, and the antagonists never get their chance to really shine, either.
Let's be clear: it's not a AAA game. Expecting everything to be top notch is a little wishful thinking. Sometimes lesser budgeted games really excel at one thing, and they sacrifice other elements in order to perfect it. This feels like they didn't want to do that, and so nothing really excelled. On the flip side, nothing - except maybe the UI at times - is bad either.
This is one of those games that if you don't go into it expecting the world, you'll likely be pleasantly surprised. If you go into it with high expectations you'll be disappointed.
