Metal Slug Review (BlizzProtogen)
Review coming from a huge Metal Slug fan who's played all of the main series games.
Not a good port of an already somewhat weaker entry to the franchise. The game from about mission 5 onward starts to rely on bullet hell tactics rather than the memory and skill required to beat some of the earlier Metal Slugs with minimal deaths. The backgrounds and settings are incredibly dull, even when not comparing them to previous entries; if you like looking at the colour brown and similar shades constantly, you'll love this game. The only positives I can say about the game is that the gameplay up until mission 5 is fun, and that the music is some of the best in the series. Anyways, that's enough about the game itself.
The port is incredibly lazy for being released in 2019, with quite a lot of bugs. Some of the achievements do not trigger in ways you may think. As an example, one of the achievements needs you to pick up a gemstone, however there is one in mission 2 that does not count to this criteria. I unlocked it around mission 6-7 very late into the game. . Additionally, there are the usual performance issues that come with ass ports like this, plus apparently very awful keyboard configs, though this is not a problem to me as I play with a controller. Also, no online Co-Op... Despite the fact the original Trilogy of Metal Slugs released on Steam 5 years before XX did have online multiplayer, and are also much better ports than this.
To conclude. Ass port of a somewhat Ass game. I'm not refunding as there are achievements + I got it on sale for around £3 so there's not really much of a point. If you really like Metal Slug and it's on sale for a price like I got it, then sure, get it. If not, save your money and pick up Metal Slug 1, X or 3.
