Moss Review (Doctor Verum)
Honestly a very neat, cute little platformer-adventure game. Quite different from all the other VR games I've played in that you control a character much like a third person or top-down perspective game, but being VR it lets you move around quite freely around every area to best see the player character. The game does a very good job weaving this fact into the story, and how the player themselves interact with the protagonist and help them on the journey. Moss is mostly a seated VR game but I find that it often helps to stand and move around a bit to get a better view of things, but it is a fairly comfortable experience overall.
Moss is a very visually enjoyable game too, with beautiful environments and an adorable little mouse protagonist. I found it is very easy to get caught up just looking at various details in the environments and the cute little animations of the mouse whenever something happens. It's a very polished, smooth experience, and I didn't experience any performance issues or bugs. The game is quite calm most of the time, but there are a few combat encounters, particularly in the later parts of the game. They weren't that difficult for me, but do require you to pay attention to both what the protagonist is doing and what you do with your 'hands'. I honestly found the platforming to be more difficult than the combat.
A lot of people have complained that the controls for the Vive are bad, but I honestly didn't find them nearly as problematic as many seem to find them. They are a bit clunky at times, and I would prefer using an analog stick for moving the protag around, but this more just a issue with the Vive controllers in general. There are a lot of community rebinds and the ability to edit the controls as well, if the player wants to.
On a minor note, I found that it's quite easy to miss the optional (I think?) challenge areas accessed via portals in the game. They are indicated by a floating light and can be interacted with using the attack button, which takes you to a forest area where you can unlock better weapons and armour. These areas are among the most interesting in the game so I highly reccomend doing them whenever you find a portal.
Overall a very neat and enjoyable game. My only real 'complaint' is that it is short and I want more, but there is a sequel as well which I will make sure to check out!
