MultiVersus Review (𝕁𝕠𝕙𝕟𝕟𝕪 𝕋𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕝𝕚𝕡𝕤)
As much as I love all the top reviews being memes, I guess I'll leave an actual review.
SO TO START US OFF, as we all know, this is a smash-clone or "smash inspired" game.
As someone who's played ALL Smash games since the OG on the 64 up to Ultimate on the Switch, and a lot of Smash clones (Slap City, Playstation All-Stars, Nicktoons All-Star Brawl, Rivals of Aether, Brawlout, and of course, Multiversus).
I can EASILY say that Multiversus is THE GREATEST SMASH-CLONE SMASH INSPIRED GAME OUT THERE.
I PERSONALLY PREFER IT OVER SMASH ITSELF AND THINK IT'S BETTER.
Let's start with the PRO's it has OVER other Smash-clones and Smash itself:
+FREE.
Of course this has to be #1, because unlike it's $10-60 competitors, you can actually try this game and see if you like it without having to blow money first on buying it.
+CROSS-PLAY ACROSS ALL PLATFORMS (PS, XBox, Switch.)
So not only is it free, but with ALL PLATFORM cross-play, you can play with your friends (if you have any) that are on different platforms. So anyone, on any platform, anywhere, can join you.
+RELEASED WITH GOOD CHARACTER POOL.
Also with some great character choices for diversity, and amazing animations, with a big list of already confirmed DLC characters coming out already at a pretty decent pace. Also keep in mind, this game is owned by Warner Brothers which other the years has acquired A LOT of assets by owning/buying other companies. So unlike Nintendo and Smash needing to get approval from companies to use their character and going through a PR hell to add them, Warner Brothers can just add most Characters themselves since they own the company that made them. As you can see in the other reviews that are memes, WALTER WHITE CAN AND SHOULD COME TO MULTIVERSUS. As well as characters like Johnny Bravo, Ben 10, Raven, Starfire. Whatever you can think of as long as it's owned by Warner Brothers. Heck, they might even pull a Nintendo/Smash and try to reach out to other companies for characters as well. Who knows? probably not since they own so many assets.
+DEVS LISTEN (most of the time) WITH PATCH NOTES.
Devs so far look like they been paying attention to the community of what's too strong/weak. Of course you can't please EVERYONE with patches, but I think they been doing a good job.
+FREE CHARACTER ROTATION EVERY 2 WEEKS.
Every 2 weeks, they make 4 characters free so you can try them out and then decided later if you want to permanently unlock them or not. What is great is you also keep and the leveling up and unlocks you earned while testing them. Even though all F2P games do this, they are pretty generous with their currency for unlocking characters. Yes it may take 40-100 matches to get enough to unlcok any chracter between the 2000-3500 gold range, but keep in mind these matches are less than 4 minutes each so it will not take long at all. Especially if you get heavily into this game. Also all newcomers get starting missions to earn enough gold for a free unlock and some left over for a 2nd unlock sooner.
+GREAT STAGE VARIETY AND FREE ONES BEING ADDED.
The game already has a decent amount of stages that are unique to each other and they are releasing new stages that will always be free.
+ROLLBACK NETCODE FOR ONLINE PLAY.
For those of you that DON'T know what Rollback Netcode is or why it's a Pro, let me keep it simple. It is ONE OF THE BEST types of netcode you can have for online play in Video Games. IT IS NOT PERFECT, but it helps A LOT to keep good/decent connections to players with bad internet. Although it's not perfect and it can't carry every poor Brazilian with 2 Mbps speed or less, but it sure as hell will do a better job than others. Meanwhile players with good internet against good internet will have a near flawless experience. One of the best they will ever experience that isn't local play.
+THE GAMEPLAY/FLOW/SPEED.
I don't really know how to put this but the gameplay is AMAZING. It's not too simple but also not too complex like Melee. The speed is really perfect balance of fast but not too fast/insane like Melee or Nicktoons All-Star Brawl. The controls/movement is nice and tight, very responsive thanks to rollback netcode, it's pretty easy to pick and and start learning while having a lot of room for growing yourself. Don't really know how to go really in-depth with this subject, kind of a loss for words with this, but it's great. I just love it.
That's all the PROs I can think of for now, but before I talk about the CONs, let me talk about 1 "controversial" matter.
+/- SKILL BASED MATCHMAKING.
No, no, no. Listen here you FPS/CoD boys. I know you HATE hearing this word and are mentally scarred by it, but listen. This is a FIGHTING game. Not a FPS. When you're going 1v1, or 2v2 with others, it only makes sense to go against people AT YOUR LEVEL. This isn't CoD where you a decent player and have 5 shitty teammates vs 6 sweatlords. It's not like playing a non-ranked in League of Legends where you will fight a 5 man Diamond Rank pre-made against you and your 4 Silver/Gold rank friends. THIS IS A GAME WHERE IF YOU SUCK, YOU WILL FIGHT SOMEONE WHO SUCKS. IF YOU ARE A SWEAT, YOU WILL FIGHT A SWEAT. Now keep in mind, this game has a RISING MMR system. Meaning EVERYONE will start at low MMR and the more you win the higher you go. Meaning once you played a big handful of matches, you will start only playing against people at your level. If you are good, you will only fight good people. If you are bad, then you will MOSTLY fight bad people. Again, since it's rising MMR, you may fight against a GOOD player who just started climbing, meaning you will get your ass kicked, but you most likely will never see them again since they will have risen past your skill level. Also even if you're good/decent, you could still get your ass kicked heavily by someone who is at the top level, but is still in the middle of climbing so they bump into you on their way to the very top. This is why this is either a positive or negative depending on the person and their mindset, but in fighting games, I believe Skill Based Matchmaking is a PRO in fighting games. Also, in the end, NO SKILL BASED MATCHMAKING SYSTEM IS PERFECT. Some are just better than others (CoD and LoL SBM can bite me).
Now lets get on with the CONS this game has:
-COSMETICS ARE WAY TOO PRICEY.
I understand this is how a F2P game makes its money back, but the prices are INSANE. The character skins average $15 a pop! If you want a skin on atleast 4 chracters, that would be about $60, which at that point you can just go buy a brand new AAA game for that price. Or multiple indie games. Really hop they tone the pricing down, especially with how little cosmetics there even are right now.
-ONLY 3 MODES TO PLAY.
All you can do so far is 1v1s, 2v2s, or a 4 player timed free-for-all in both Free Play and Custom Games. What is really dumb is that you CAN'T do a 3 player free-for-all, it HAS to be 4 player AND it HAS to be Timed. No stocks. Also you can't do 2 v 1, it HAS TO BE 2 v 2. These are REALLY SIMPLE THINGS THAT CAN BE CHANGED, BUT HAVE YET TO. Add items or remove are also an option, but thats it. For online play with randoms, it's SET rules. Not much diversity in things to do.
-PLAYING ONLINE IS STILL BUGGY.
I know I was praising the online earlier because it has Rollback netcode, and don't get me wrong, IT IS GOOD AND FAR BETTER THAN SMASH ULTIMATE, but it's one of the WEAKER Rollback Netcode online I've seen. It will still have some delays, lags, or rollbacks. Hope to see this improve in the future.
That's all I can think of for CONs.
TL;DR - GOOD GAME AND FREE!!!
