Vast Oversights, But Vast Potential
I basically never write reviews but I feel compelled to here. The lack of movement binds being available is baffling to me and an incredible oversight, and there's definitely annoying bugs. But with that being said, the devs stated such fixes are incoming, and I don't want to let such overshadow a game with amazing potential once we get past these initial bugs.
The quality and gameplay of this game is so much better than the first. I'll update this review after I play some more campaign, but it seems solid and better than most platform fighter offline content. But online play, and competitively, once you get past the bugs and are actually in a match, it's freakin' great. I'm addicted, I'm invested, and I want to see this game be the cross-play smash-like that we need.
Additions I want to see the most are of course movement binds, autorun toggle, other flexibility toggles for controls, and BUG FIXES. But some personal stuff I'd love to see are:
Crew battle options would be amazing . A cross-platform friends list where you can see online status, invite, and follow and spectate (depending on settings)! A 3D replay viewer (ideally with timeline scrubbing) where we can change camera axis and everything (montages, clips, etc skyrocket in potential if we get a good replay tool). Also, for the ranked algorithm, I kind of want a good blend of per character elo, and overall elo, that makes the most sense to me. As a very experienced player in other platform fighters, I definitely want to see much better AI (note to devs: take a look at Brawlhalla AI implementations?). And for max difficulty to be much harder, dark souls hard, because I believe we should always have the option to be challenged, and everyone always has the ability to just not choose the higher difficulties.
Quick section of bugs that need to be fixed and a couple suggestions:
Needing cross-play option to be on even when you're on the same platform, to join rooms, cross-play option turning off itself, needing workarounds to use the controls you want in campaign and I've heard they can reset during runs, I've heard you can become soft locked as well but don't know if that's on PC, players should have no invincibility after they miss ultimate it's very annoying, rematch should be the first option after a game not the second, you should be able to edit lobby size while a lobby is still live, max lobby size could be higher
Oh I'll quickly say this, while at first the roster and character cuts did seem weird to me, I've learned I care about character movesets far more. I'll take movesets I love over characters I enjoy with mid movesets any day of the week. I don't even remember a lot about many of these shows, don't remember Avatar yet I'm in love with Korra's playstyle and moveset. So the same extends to the DLC characters for me, the names don't excite me but the playstyles definitely may.
I could make this review far more thorough, and perhaps I will when I feel like it (unless character limit lol), but more than anything I'm writing this because I truly want people to give the devs a chance to fix some of these glaring issues, because gameplay wise, this is great. I'm sure we'll need balancing, move fixes and etc, but it's a blast. This game should not have shipped with the problems I mentioned even if it meant a delay. But it's here, and I'm hopeful that the sore spots will be addressed soon and this game becomes a casual and competitive mainstay.
