Pinball FX Review (Great Big Guff)
Interesting pack. First let's look at the tables.
Funhouse is fairly unique, but you can see how it was kind of a prototype to Roadshow, which is a much better table. Not much to work for except multiball, but the actual multiball itself is fairly challenging so that makes up for lack of other things to do on the table. The shots feel great and I can see myself sinking a lot of hours into this table. Rudy is fun, although I always think he's calling me something else when he says "Hey, Bucky!"...
Dr Dude is... I mean... ok... It's charming and is definitely of an era. It's from the same universe as Party Zone in WMS pack 2. I know the tables in this pack are older, and as such lack the complexity of newer tables, but I just feel like there's not much to do here. Increase your dude meter by shooting 3 lit sections. One is kind of a ramp, the other is a stand up, and the last is a magnet. Shoot them all 3 times, then shoot up to the whirligig, which then lights multiball. Rinse and repeat. I think I prefer this table to Party Zone, but oh my god is that "gift of gab" tune annoying!
Space Station is one of the most interesting "remake" tables I've seen on this game. With the removal of inlanes, it forces you to take shots when you normally wouldn't. Much like the other tables here, this is still very simplistic, probably the most simple in this pack but I find myself enjoying this table the most. There's literally just a few stand ups to hit and multiball. That's all there is to this table, but it's just so satisfying. All of the shots, the way the sling shots can completely screw up your play if you're not paying attention. Because there's so much up against you, it makes getting high scores immensely satisfying. Brilliant table!
This is a very unique pack, and zen have clearly put a lot of love and care into it. I've yet to run into any issues other than the fact that the audio seems REALLY low. I know you can adjust the volume in the menus but doing so means that you deafen yourself coming out of each table and back into the menus. I'd rather strain to hear, or even put on some other music while I play these tables until this is fixed. The audio was never that great on the tables to begin with due to their age, so it's not like much is being missed, but I would have liked to hear a bit more. (Although, playing other music means I don't have to listen to the awful "Gift of Gab" rap on Dr Dude, so I guess it's not all bad!)
Thoroughly recommend this pack! Just over £7 for tables you'd easily spend about £10 + on in the arcades, it's a no brainer!
