Prehistoric Kingdom Review (Frag Monkey)
So, anyone here remember prehistoric park?. that old dino doc with Nigel Marven back in the day? if you do well its basically if that series got its own video game minus the time travel so if you loved it you'll like this too cuz guess what. The og himself Nigel Marven is actually featured here. Nice touch from the devs.
Now for the actuall review. This is still an early access title as of writing this so do take it with a pinch of salt, end produkt could differ and all that but all things considered. I think its a nice, niche game for genuine zoo game enjoyers, i see elements of gameplay pulled from other iconic zoo game titles like the customizability and exhibit building of planet zoo, but with a touch of zoo tycoon to simply things for the better in my opinion. Even some elements of jurassic park operation genesis is you look close enough, particularly in the fossil extraction menu wich reminds me of the fossil digs in jpog with the whole multiple expeditions in one formation thing, very nice!.
The game strikes a decent enough balance of simplicity and realism, enough to please any paleo enthusiast given the realistic designs of the creatures, but also simplified gameplay to make it accessible for anyone who just wants to get in, make a zoo and enjoy. For example, there is challange mode wich has the usuall things you expect from a zoo game right. Gradually unlocking higher rated animals, managing the economy and hiring staff and so on, but its a bit more in depth here with stuff like produce facilities you don't just restock food items for animals here you need a facility that makes them. Or you can just play on sandbox and chillax fam, unlimited money feeders don't need restock and all the stuff a typicall sandbox should have.
Now for the literall main attractions, the animals themselves are not only modelled accurately to current paleonthologicall knowledge but they behave and act in very bleivable ways, like they genuinely feel like living breathing creatures as they have a pretty varied array of animations and interactions with the environment though i'm sure this is just scratching the surface for what the devs have planned. The devs did a great job of making the animals feel believable and enjoyable to watch and observe in thier habitats. Along with multiple maps with beutifull finely handcrafted environments.
For those of you who really want to design your own buildings and other park stuff, i dunno i can't speak to much for this aspect since i don't really bother with customization much, but its there and very in depth for those with broader architectural ambitions than the defaults yes. There is the community workshop so you can upload or download creations from there to add to your park.
Do note this is not like jurassic world evolution , its meant to provide a more relaxed comfy experience so don't expect any of those pulse pounding dino breakouts in the jwe series, you go there for the adrenaline and challange you come here for the chill vibes dig?
Now, early access games do.. have a reputation but i personally feel completely confident and sure that the devs will fully deliver in time. This has in my eyes the trademarks of a labour of love and a passion project and the game gets regular uppdates
Shoutout to all fellow paleo enjoyers out there, take care and cheers.
