Remnant: From the Ashes - Subject 2923 Review (PEDRO_HBA)
It's more of the same.
If you liked the game's original content, you'll definitely find more to satisfy you here.
All bosses are good (especially the main ones). And most of them, from what I've seen, are those that don't use ads to inflate the challenge, allowing you to focus 100% on the fight.
Even the smaller ones, which are stronger versions of normal enemies that you normally encounter, are much better designed and can always provide a satisfying challenge.
The normal and special enemies are basically the same archetypes that you are already used to, but with a certain extra predisposition towards enemies with hitscan weapons. Which is too annoying for my taste.
Especially because now some of them seem to exhibit more complex behaviors, positioning themselves strategically, actively avoiding your line of fire and even trying to flank you, making facing them more interesting and frustrating at the same time, as the game mechanics do not favor this type of dynamic. Especially on higher difficulties.
But it doesn't tarnish the experience too much.
The new territories are what you expect. They still have that same mediocre quality and crude personality, with simplistic geometry and unmemorable level design that you find throughout the entire base game, but at least, this time, some of them even have a little more atmosphere.
The introduction even reminded me of the beginning of Resident Evil 4, with its foggy and silent rural landscapes.
Prime Ward, however, the missing level of the main game, is nothing more than a labyrinth that is not very interesting to explore, but it adds a lot of context to the game's background.
You will still encounter those unbearable dungeons where you are constantly besieged by endless waves of enemies, making progress extremely slow (And frustrating when you die at the end and have to do it all over again) unless you decide to become a walking tank or bring some friends to help you.
At my last count, I was immediately assaulted by 14 enemies as soon as I passed the checkpoint. It's a new record.
You know how it works. There is no encounter design in this game. You walk around, they randomly dump enemies on you in often unpredictable ways and you simply have to deal with it. So deal with it.
Some parts are worse than others, but overall it's tolerable.
The new items are interesting too, but I would like to see more armor sets and weapons.
Anyway, i paid almost nothing for the addition and I was very satisfied. It doesn't bring anything "new" to the experience in mechanical or creative terms, but it plays it safe, offering an expansion within reasonable expectations.
