Return to Monkey Island Review (wormwoodz)
I'll leave my honest review as someone who enjoys playing point&click adventure games, and has played all the previous Monkey Island games around the time they were released. This is quite frankly one of the worst point&click games I have ever played, and it is baffling to me this product was put out by veterans in the genre.
The art style looks good to me, I don't really have a preference in presentation as long as it looks decent and well animated, I've seen better work but it is perfectly fine. The voice acting is decent, music is good, I don't find a lot to nitpick on the audio-visual presentation. But the writing is honestly terrible, at times even cringe worthy. I had heard from other reviews that this game had a badly written ending, that didn't really factor into my decision of trying this game for myself. And to be frank I didn't find the ending itself as insultingly bad as a lot of people described it, it is the whole game that was written with as much wit as a plank of wood.
A LOT of the environment interaction prompts in this game are something along the lines of "Oh remember this from previous game? Oh wow how fun that was!", SERIOUSLY?! Authors is this what you think fans of this series want to see?? Redrawn environments and recycled characters regurgitating lines from decades ago? Characters like Murray were fun and memorable because when they were first introduced they were NEW well written characters, with fun and creative interactions, who were also not trying to 'compete' for attention with the whole cast of characters from previous titles in the series with some flimsy justification to be in the plot. What's worse is the few new characters introduced in this title aren't even good, quite frankly entirely forgettable for the most part. I'll avoid spoilers so I won't go into details but the plot that accompanies this poor excuse for a cash grab is so flat and dull, I honestly thought of quitting the game and not even finish it. I guess I was curious to see if the end would be that catastrophically terrible, but I guess no, the journey there to me was far worse. The game starts well enough, with an interesting setting and a certain charm, but it quickly descends into the "Oh look at this familiar environment! We want you to notice this!" cringe fest that drags itself nowhere interesting.
The puzzles are dull and for the most part just an excuse to have you trek across the map several times to artificially increase the amount of time you will be playing this game. The solutions are usually clear, but they have you go back and forth between several screens and sometimes islands, making the experience all the more grating. I'd rather be stuck in a puzzle for a long period of time and think than waste my time traversing dull environments for a solution I have already figured out. You collect items that don't even fit into any puzzle in the game but are there just as 'references' to more interesting puzzles of past games... like the authors are trying to parade their framed platinum singles in front of you, while you are listening to their latest absolutely uninspired garbage. Yes I remember the past games, but is this supposed to be funny or entertaining? Because all it does is remind me I paid money for this garbage that seams to want to cling to some brand name as some poorly disguised cash grab.
The 'final note' you unlock if you manage to stomach this game to the end sounds like it was written by someone who thinks their audience has put their games in some sort of pedestal and this is their heartfelt goodbye or something. Does anyone even think like that? We are not in the 90s anymore, there are so many good modern p&c adventure titles out there, with both superior gameplay and writting. You are not competing with the Sierra titles of old, and you are not even trying to keep up with the modern times, you are just throwing your name out there and hoping you are still relevant enough that people will give you the benefit of the doubt. Well... fool me once, hope you enjoy your retirement!
Sorry for my review being a bit rant-y, but I felt like I really should warn others who play this type of games on what they can expect if they decide to pay for this. Honestly, I'd recommend you look somewhere else if you are looking for a game in this genre, plenty of new games that came out recently for about the same price tag that deserve your attention way more that this cringe fanfic.
