Reveil Review (OGMillwood)
As far as short, sweet indie-horror titles go, this is honestly one of the best I've played in years. There's so much to love about what Pixelsplit have created here, it's almost impossible to know where to start.
The attention to detail is the first thing which struck me. Everything has been so lovingly crafted, from the puzzles right down to feel and flow of the environments. The use of lighting and color is particularly stunning, and if you have a HDR display, you're in for an absolute treat. The sound design deserves equal praise - from the ambient elements to the soundtrack itself, the immersion was pretty much flawless. And there's some genuine creativity in the mix once you start to understand the broader context of the game world.
I did initially have some misgivings about the voice acting. Not because of it's quality, but rather the tonality in the context of the protagonist's experiences. Without spoiling anything, this too has it's place - and the latter parts of the game took some turns I genuinely wasn't expecting.
On the performance side of things, I ran this at 4K / max settings on a 3080 Ti and only experienced the occasional hitch when entering a new area. Reveil does have some very brief loading screens between chapters, so while the odd stutter was disappointing, they were so infrequent that it's almost not worth mentioning.
In short, the love for what this small team has crafted here just oozes out of every corner of the game. If you're looking for a palette cleanser or just feel like a bite-sized trip down a psychedelic horror rabbit hole, I honestly can't recommend this enough. I really hope this finds the audience it deserves.
