Ride 5 Review (Get the Pop and Pop It!)
Edit at bottom...
Oh my God what are you doing Milestones? Do you guys wake up in the morning, gather all devs in the conference room and throw a dice on a table on how the physics should be in the next version of your game? I played a run on Nordschleife to see how it felt since that is a nice track to ride overall and I can say it's unplayable in Ride 5 if you want to enjoy it. You might as well play lawn-mowing simulator because you have to go so slow to not crash in every corner that all sense of thrill and speed while riding is gone.
I really did soften up to MotoGP 23 physics even if I feel the understeering is a bit too heavy as well in that game but in Ride 5 it is just ridiculous, the bikes are so unresponsive. It's a weird kind of arcade feel mixed with some attempt at realism, yet the refusal to turn-in in corners even if you push the brake fully make it feel so strange and boring quite frankly. You need to brake to be able to not go too far but the braking make it so you can't lean at all so you miss the turn. When you do brake early so you do take the turn correct the game is just so f:ing boring to play and Nordschleife felt like a snooze to ride on.
I will issue a refund because I'm so disappointed, I never thought I would say this but MotoGP 23 feel way better even if it has it's issues also, the longer braking distances is annoying to me and too much understeering as well but at least you adapted and it's somewhat enjoyable now with improved sense of speed even if Ride 4 always had it beaten with sense of speed and MotoGP could definitely improve on that. The standing up gyro effect on throttle is cool in GP 23 even though a bit too strong and sensitive in my opinion. In Ride 5 it's there but less and a bit weird. Why didn't they just stick to the Ride 4 physics with subtle improvements, I really enjoyed them. All they needed to do was add a bit of that gyro effect on Ride 4's physics and it would have felt really cool in my opinion.
The Ride 4 brakes are way snappier and you can brake later and brake into corners making it feel very intuitive and fun to play. It also feels like you can trust your eyes, if you come into a corner in a certain speed you can push the brakes and make the corner most of the time. In Ride 5 you are always too fast no matter if you come in at snail speed or not, it's such a deceiving sense of speed and it make you play like shit. Sure you can get used to that but why would I get used to something that feels like bicycle speed, it's NOT FUN!
Graphics are ok I did not see much difference from 4, I went back in to compare with my Ride 4 and sound seemed to be a bit improved on some bikes even though one bike I tried just sounded weird. The Aprilia, decent roar at the higher rpm but a weird loud clonk when shifting and then since you always have to ride slow you always get the bumblebee sound of the bike anyway so not fun or cool sounding at all. You might as well ride an electric wheel-chair down Nordschleife, it would behave better and sound cooler most likely.
So disappointed Milestones seriously, you really killed my expectations today I was so excited to download and finally play the follow-up to Ride 4, a game where I had so much fun and was ready to sink 100's of hours into. I'm so tired of you really, how it seems like you sit at the office discussing how you can make each game worse than the last one. Where is the passion and the feel for what works and what doesn't?
I am mad because I care, I am sad because now it's another 3 years for you to release a new version with hopefully physics people enjoy. If I didn't care I wouldn't type a review at all but this was like a punch in the stomach seriously. I'm so exhausted from seeing your games slowly dwindle away and become shit when the fixes are so easy. It's just that you seem to be on this journey to change things that don't need changing and add things that might sound cool on paper but translate to crap in game pleasure. What do you have against fun factor, so desperate to make the game realistic according to the speedometer and IRL lap times that you kill everything fun about playing a bike game.
I'm done, give me back my deluxe edition money because you ain't getting it with this game in it's current state! I'm going back to MotoGP 23 for now, the best GP since 20 so thank you for that at least.
Please get your sh*t together!
Edit: I love this game now, the bike and settings were trash, super fun now. Check out my time with it on stream https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1907676084 I know it sounds dumb but I highly recommend it. It's not perfect, still a bit understeer and the switch side to side is a bit heavy but the BMW bike made me change my mind overall.
