Ride 5 Review (Popukon)
I asked for a refund pretty quickly.
The game looks decent but nothing spectacular, still i wouldn't expect great graphics from a realistic sim oriented game.
i got a refund for some of the reasons i'll mention.
Physics are pretty weak and everything is made to make the game somewhat easier (maybe to compensate some flaws i'll mention later)
. Even with all assists turned off i didn't manage to highside even once despite a full front break at 260km/h
. Even with all assists off i didn't manage to lose the rear when exiting a turn at full throttle.
. Even with all assists off i didn't manage to feel the existence of a clutch other than for revving, also show that even on stock bikes, the engine brake literally doesn't exist in the game.
The overall feel of the bikes, after trying a few in all ranges of power, including ones I actually used in person, is decent but I always have this feeling in games like Ride or MotoGP that I have to call the brakes and handle a few minutes before I use them or the bike won't turn.
This feeling doesn't appear in GPbikes or trackdayR and obviously, doesn't exist in person.
The game is pretty obviously made to be played in third person despite the modelization efforts for first person.
The game lacks a functioning first person camera that looks where a rider should be looking in a turn : at the exit of it.
Why would I look in front of me without knowing when the turn ends ?
It's an issue that would either be fixed with an automatic head turning option or with an actual head tracking like flight sims use with TrackIR/openIR support. (VR would also work but after trying, it's pretty vomit-inducing to ride in VR with controller)
Rear brakes feel like engine brake but worse, I know it's weaker on most motorcycle but I swear you can feel the difference between a free wheel and a rear brake on a M1000RR or other insane motorcycles. You can't really feel it in game, the rear brake is here to make the front brake work harder.
The AI ...
I could deal with all other issues quite easily considering the game as yet another simcade. It's what actually works after all, actual sim is a niche, even Isle of Mann didn't pull the sim notch all the way up.
But damn the AI is absolutely ruining it, it's not agressive, it's actually a bunch of murderers, no matter the settings or difficulty, if the game was actually realistic, most pilots would die in the first turn of a race.
It's not even funny I literally saw one go push against 2 other to move them out.
Contact with AI already is a shame in a racing game but can be understandable since the player is unpredictable.
But AI actually going for a push with other AIs ? that shows how absolutely terrible this AI is.
And I don't really want to mention it but still will, I have no idea why they even give you the choice to equip your motorcycle with slicks.
You're stuck with regular tyres in most races and categories.
Also i saw an AI H2R actually performing a sharp turn at a rather low speed and it almost made me laught, that thing turns just as well as a busa with swingarm extension or just like a freakin bus in real life.
Oh and last but not least, the motorcycle choice feels limited but very much FILLED with potential microtransactions as i can already see 3 paying packs available and lots of motorcycle that were in Ride4 are not here.
Also i know it's not everyone's favorite but lower cm3 bikes seems to be lacking.
Overall the game is a disapointement, while it could have been a decent motorcycle simcade, the AI ruined for me what little could be enjoyable.
I also feel some frustration in an issue that isn't one with the game.
Isle of mann added an open world that was ultimately useless but still enjoyable, but I felt frustration because I was limited to SBK class monster motorcycles.
Ride has actual factory branded motorcycle and could offer a "forza horizon" esque experience with an enjoyable open world, it's frustrating as the only other real options for open world motorcycles are in game that failed motorcycle handling (the crew) or are starting to get old and are not supported anymore (test drive)
TrackdayR offers openworld modded maps but it's just an early access limited game on empty maps.
Anyway dont buy ride5 at full price, game doesn't deserve more than 25€
