Rocket League Review (Thaumic)
This is Rocket League!
Oh my, well my hours in this game really don't lie. Although I mostly hate the direction the game has gone now, this game will remain one of my absolute classics and I still end up returning to the field!
Rocket League by Psyonix, the car soccer game that everyone and their mother probably has heard of now. You may be wondering why i am even reviewing a game you cannot even get on steam anymore and for that i say... I really don't know either.
Rocket league is a game where you must hit the ball into the opponents net.. Simple right?
Well yes the game is very simple and is very limited in its game mechanics; that is the reason I only have about 3000 hours in the game, it has little content. The truth is Rocket League makes this very simple concept for a game very advanced with a huge skill ceiling, almost to its detriment at times. Rocket League looks like a very simple pickup and play game at heart but once you start getting into it you realise how stupidly complex a car football game can get.
First of all Rocket League's roots were seeded in a little game with a short name called "Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars" on the PlayStation 3. Many of the core mechanics were brought back and refined into a new era of a genre that is over saturated by the 2 games alone. Rocket League allows you to use boost and break the laws of physics by propelling yourself while in the air... I mean flip to make split second g force destroying stunts that we would only dream... Yea you get the idea, Rocket League is very arcade styled but also robust and consistent physics if you are happy to ignore the amount of times Psyonix have had to change the demolition mechanics. Yes if you slam a car fast enough you can see their dust particles in the windscreen with a conveniently shaped boom in the explosion.
Rocket League allows you to play 1v1 ,2v2 ,3v3 or a casual exclusive gamemode you should never touch unless you like being a bumper-car 4v4. Yes there is a competitive gamemode in this game. Are you even surprised its a Multiplayer game. This game has some other gamemodes and some that come by here and there as events, but these are more the cherry on top for the game, if you don't like the sound of the base game then there is almost no point playing for these. Like any other game a majority of the community swear by this gamemode and you can find all types of people in there to play with or watch sit AFK while they flame you in chat.
Oh man the community, one of the things that really make or break a multiplayer game and the game developers can barely control it. Rocket League's community has every type of person you would expect with the one exception, cheaters... Rocket League being a completely server side game makes cheating literally impossible. Cheaters are so rare in this game that at 3000 hours I have only ever seen 1 cheater and even then Psyonix patched the exploit in under a week. If you can understand that you don't need to win every game to have fun and are willing to play with bad teammates even when losing by over 3 goals just for the sake of fun I highly recommend this game, after all its a video game not a job and a lot of the community (like any other multiplayer game) take the game too seriously. You will need to be able to have a straight face when someone, starts throwing, flaming you, because a lot of the community is very toxic.
You may consider that since the game is server side there will be a lot of ping and server issues right? Well if you ignore the times Rocket League got so popular that the servers came crashing down; the servers in the past were what you would expect from an indie studio and now that epic games have taken Psyonix under their wing there are almost no issues with the servers apart from the occasional doser; also only been in 1 game that was dos'ed in 3000 hours. Due to being server sided the net-code needs to be top notch and I can say that you will not notice (assuming your internet is actually decent) that the game is fully server sided. It is only at the edge cases for example where 2 cars pass each other where you can really see a little bit of rubber banding but by the nature of online games you cannot really do much about it. Rocket League has their methods to help reduce this effect like client side prediction and they work really well. Rocket League has one of the best net-codes in a server-side game I have ever seen. Due to rocket leagues heavy reliance on a stable network connection, if you have even a bit of packet loss however you will notice it, but you will only really notice worse edge cases and mild lag-backs once you get to about 150ms ping. Consistent internet is a requirement for a fun and enjoyable experience like any online fast paced game.
I greatly recommend this game to anyone who is casual gamer to the hardcore grind-fest competitive gamer, this game requires a more passive mindset and as long as you can still have fun in a game while losing you will be able to play this game even when you aren't playing your best.
