Sovereign Syndicate Review (Medesha)
A beautiful game set in steampunk Victorian London. You begin as Atticus, a minotaur magician, who is battling his personal demons when he's approached by a mysterious stranger. As Atticus, you explore the dark underbelly of the alternate Earth setting, making decisions based on your inner voices and deciding how to approach the different challenges (brute strength, wit, sleight of hand, etc.)
When I moved to the second chapter, I was surprised to get a new hero to play! There are three (or four) in all--Atticus the minotaur, Clara the lounge singer, Teddy the inventor, and Teddy's sidekick, Otto the automaton. The way their stories intertwine is the creative heart of the game. I loved seeing the world through each character's eyes and figuring out what was important to each of them.
This is a narrative-driven game based on skill checks, with no combat. The writing is stellar; it drew me right into the game and made me care about the people within. The art is gorgeous, too. While the overall play time is short, lots of decision points and ways to tackle challenges means I'll definitely play again after my first game is done.
