Spin Rhythm XD Review (Mag!cGuy)

Edit : Now that I literally completed the game 100% and am having fun on the extreme difficulty (beyond XD), I'm just editing this to confirm that there is nothing like this game. It's sheer fun and skill and the incredible thing is that you never stop improving. At first the Expert tracks feel hard, then the XD tracks feel laughably impossible, then you try your first RemiXD and wonder wtf is going on, and then you find yourself completing level 35 RemiXD. It's a testament to the genius design of this game. Love the devs for this.

I don't like rythm games usually. They ask to be pitch perfect while pretty much having only one control, clicking the mouse. And many times if you miss, the music "breaks". For me, that manages to be boring and annoying at the same time. Putting a story or cool graphics around it doesn't change a thing : rythm games are just not for me, at all.
But this one is so much better in every way, thanks to two crucial points :
- There are several controls that make for a more diverse game play and, most importantly, engage you so much more in the music being played. Moving the mouse, flicking it, "shaking" it, pushing the space bar, having to click or hold while following the trace... it's genuinely fun.
- The music is not interrupted if you fail a few notes - the whole level doesn't come crashing either, you just lose a few health points that can replenish if you don't miss the ones after for a while.
Beyond these two core tenets that make this stand a league above the rest, it also simply :
- is incredibly polished in terms of visuals, UI and UX.
- has a great selection of songs that can go beyond the usual electro stuff. I was genuinely surprised by some genre in there and how well they work with the mechanics of this game.
- boasts top notch accessibility through 5 difficulty levels for each song, and that's not to mention the plethora of accessibilty options in the menu (that I personally don't use). I find myself hopping between hard and expert depending on the tracks and it's perfect.
The devs literally "solved" the rythm genre to my mind and that's no small feat. Kudos !
