Starship Troopers: Extermination Review (Lemming Legion)
I was very excited for the "Official 1.0 Release" patch. I'm sad to say I'm severely disappointed in what was delivered. No new guns, no new class perks, 1 new enemy, and the "Campaign".
Don't even get me started on the Campaign. It's a long, overly drawn out tutorial that doesn't teach you anything about the game. It doesn't teach base building. It barely teaches you about refineries. It doesn't teach anything about any classes. It doesn't teach you about the Armor or Crit system. It barely teaches you about Inferno bugs which don't even work because they're a motor inside a low ceiling cave. It doesn't teach what Grenadier bugs are. It doesn't teach any kind of priority, and it teaches you "You can't depend on anyone but yourself" in a team based game. It also tells new players that things are monotonous, tedious and boring.
"Go kill Warriors" Ok. *kills like 15 warriors* and then your very suddenly slapped with a victory screen after like 20 seconds. Every single mission is "Run a few hundred meters, kill some thing(s) and then get slapped with a victory screen". However the final 5 missions are psychotic Hive Buster Missions with a strict 5 and a half minute timer to deal with a Royal Guard, who is OP, and hordes of smaller things that your AI companions are utterly incapable of handling, all while trying to complete an objective that requires you to stop fighting and stare at an interactable for like 5 seconds straight. And if you get hit at any time during those 5 seconds? Well first you will be kicked out of the interactable because your screen will flinch, or you get launched, but second you're likely to die by being spontaneously swarmed because you had to stop fighting. Forgot to mention getting to the interactable summons a horde basically on top of you. Did I mention you're under a strict time limit?
The entire "Campaign" I could only find myself saying "that's it?". There's no sense of accomplishment to anything. You can't even level up your guns in it. You do however get fat amounts of EXP for whatever class you choose per mission. About 6 missions in I decided to stick to the Guardian class since it was level 1. Guardian also made later objectives (the ridiculous Hive Busting missions) easier because Guardian is "OP" with health, damage resistance perks, extra health perk, big capacity LMG, and on demand stun with his deployable wall ability which also makes you tanky as heck, immovable AND highly accurate. By the end I had made it to level 12 which is absolutely insane. In less than 3 hours I had almost maxed out a class. If I had started from the very beginning it likely would be maxed. Also every single mission in that painful Campaign all took place underground. Except for I think one that had you go to the surface for all of 1 minute to complete a brain dead easy objective and then get slapped with a victory screen. The entire campaign is just so.... lazy. Rico was supposed to be big hype for the campaign and yet he's just a PNG and a voice. He pops in often at the final, and only, objective of each Campaign mission to say something and then mission over. He might as well not exist. He also yaps too much and tries to be so cool as a PNG.
I don't entirely understand the purpose of the Galactic War thing. It's what? All for some lackluster skins? I don't like being forced to join a group of randoms just to contribute to it. And I assume to only play missions that are already present in the game that I can play without joining a Company. It's been 2 days and the Galactic War has already progressed immensely... with an 80 day time frame given. The narrator just yaps too much.
With this giant patch I expected a ton of things to get refined. This "Official Release" feels more like one big bug patch with little to nothing to add to it. A lot of the interactions are still clunky. Things can still be unresponsive. Trying to place equipment often doesn't work if you get nudged during the really long deploy animations. Enemy scaling and balancing is still psychotic. A ton of enemies can basically one shot you if you're not a Guardian class, and you're armed with BB guns... and there are 20 enemies coming right at you.... Gunners are still OP if there is more than one. Even one can melt you from basically across the map and is constantly flinching your screen because of it meaning you can't shoot.
The Armor system still feels really dumb. Aim center mass where the Warrior crit point is and somehow magically every shot I fired can't hit the crit point. Yet I shoot the top of a Tiger and land a ton of crits! Or Gunners. The crit point is on its side and seems wildly inconsistent to hit; Good luck if you're aiming head on. Crit ammo feels obsolete if your gun can't even pen the armor to deal consistent damage when you don't hit a crit point. And with how spastic enemies can and will move; hitting a critical point with any bit of consistency is often borderline impossible.
Moving an inch while aiming your gun is still wildly punishing because your accuracy goes to Narnia. Even in general guns are laughably inaccurate or just never seem to hit exactly where you want. Several guns have unnecessarily long or over the top reload animations like the Magnum, or the Grenade Launcher especially. It doesn't need that revolver-esq spin added; just load the gun. They also love to have a delay after the animation is done to actually count as loaded. So I find myself having to reload again very frequently because I interrupted the already loaded and racked gun. Guns still weirdly aim off in weird directions when going to ADS. Or they love to shoot and aim down to the left.
In the end all I'll say is this wasn't worth waiting for. I'm glad I paid I think like half off while it was still in Beta. Because for an official release this is not worth $50. I've played this game for a while. I gave it a break to wait for the big release. And it sucks. I haven't even touched the multiplayer since this "big" release; at this point I don't want to. I feel betrayed and that my patience and love for this game was spat on.
