The Beast Inside Review (Doc Holiday)
Good Mystery/Thriler game
This game was on my backlog for a long time. I kept trying to remind me through the year that I bought this game and had to install it, but for various reasons I couldn't, and the cover probably didn't help, I actually think I kept avoiding this game simply because the cover disgusted me. But then why I bought this game in the first place? I actually can't remember, as I am turning into an old man these days.
Anyway, the cover of this game is very misleading, as it suggests some kind of very gory title, with a kind of body horror, when it's actually nothing like that. The game has an interesting dynamic of being part a super chill walking simulator and puzzle solving, and part a "run for your life" with intense setpieces... But the horror part is more like a saturday night mystery-scary flick than any gory fest or psychological terror. It works really well for the most part - during the puzzles I could feel for the first time in a long time that some of my brain cells were still functioning (that sensation passed quickly though), and on the action segments I turned into a kid again with my face glued to the screen. The gameplay is so simple, but it's very effective.
The graphics are really great, I thought they looked super slick. The house and forest during the day look so nice and cozy, I was walking around for some minutes just to appreciate the vista. The action controls work well but can be clunky sometimes - I had to switch from gamepad to keyboard and mouse during one of the intense fights-, however it's not a major issue. Voice acting is a mixed bag, as I was annoyed by the main characters speaking, but there was a major enemy later in the game that was completely hilarious and had great vocal deliveries... I actually let this enemy wander around (putting myself in danger) so I could hear all it's lines, so funny.
I'm not going to talk about the story of this game, as anything would be spoiling.... It serve it's purpose, and I will leave it at that.
Overall I had a really great time, and for the extremely small price I paid for it in December 2021 (I had to check my e-mail with the receipts, yeah), this was the best bang for buck I've had in a long time.
