The Cub Review (iMangini ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
Not sure what is in for this game other than the graphics and music. Gameplay wise this is an up to 'ok' game, since its way to short for a plataformer. Somehow it feels like way too much tought was put into one place, leaving a lot to desire here.
The game tries to sell on the 'music' and the radio aspects. And the, being real, the music is good sometimes, but it feels like the game doesn't know if it wants you to be enjoying it, or running around not carring at all for the radio, since levels are way to short and do little to try and 'challange' the player to stay and have a reason to hear the radio at all.
Then there's the story... Oh boy... On the Demo version I tought the story was somewhat interesting, but with the full realase, it's clear the development studio needs to learn about 'pacing', and that sometimes: less is better. The game borderlines calls the player stupid by repeating the same piece of information/scene you just learned over a short period of time. One example os this, was with Charlie, when you first get to him: The game will show the Cub aproaching Charlie, clearly with some fear/curiosity, then will cut to the Cub narrating about his fear/curiosity, at the end you'll learn about Charlie wife that was left behind... Then when you get back to control the character and the game throws a piece of log at you with the same information, again, about Charlie's wife... Like to add salt to the injury the radio also starts talking about the same things lol. We just saw that, why mentioning it again? Somewhat I've left with a feeling that removing the Cub narrative would make things way better and less repetitive, especialy because the game already does a good work of conveying the Cub feelings and toughts in-game with gestures and expressions.
Finally the platforming aspects. I believe the platform tag could be thrown out of the window, since it was poorly implemented. Controls are not consistent, you're supossed to be a nimble kid, yet momentum is not persisted between movements. One second you're dashing, sliding, the next you hit a corner and has to fully stops for an animation of the character climbing the corner to happen... Not to mention the game has a serious problem detecting colisions when mid-air... It's visible the devs had a hard time with this and forces the player to grab onto things. On the mining cart part, I would be flying over the cart (like way too high) and the game would lock-me into the cart, then other time would let me pass flying through the cart...
Unfortunately this is one of those game that I'll never be back to finish, I've honestly gave-up near the end of the game as I was not having fun anymore and felt like a chore keep playing due to things mentioned aboved.
