The Evil Within Review (LunaRoses)

I adore this game, if the hours I have on it don't show that, I'm not sure what will!

OVERALL
I highly recommend to both horror lovers and non-horror lovers, The Evil Within. The story is awesome, the game play is not complex or buggy, the game runs beautifully, and you can replay the game and still have a blast. Get all the DLC on sale!
If you're alright with a read, I go into more detail down below! (with no spoilers!) I'll cover main game and all DLC's stories, game-play, replay-ability, difficulties, and controversy surrounding the game.
Thank you for reading, hope you enjoy the game if you get it!

THE STORY
Simple in some areas, a bit more complex in others. In true horror game fashion if you want the entire story, including how some of the game's characters feel towards other individuals within the game, then you'll collect all the files and audio tapes within the base game and in the DLCs. The story gets dark, with characters back stories and with the actual story itself. You'll see themes of family tragedies, death, murder, serial killings, abuse of patients in a mental institution, religious cults, abuse towards a minor, life altering incidents, kidnapping, psychological manipulation, torture, and more. I can confidently say if you're a true horror/thriller fan, this game's story is for you.

DLC STORIES
If you want the full story of The Evil Within, you'll need to get the DLC, I'm being upfront honestly. Two of the DLC's center around a different character that works along side the main character of the main game, these DLC's are called 'The Assignment' and 'The Consequence'. The last DLC is called 'The Executioner' where you play as a character not from the main game itself, but an unseen npc (he's neither in the main game nor the other dlc's, we never see what he looks like.) who becomes an enemy with a personal quest. I would highly recommend getting these DLC's on a sale.

GAME-PLAY
I've played this game on my pc only with my keyboard controls, it's easy to adapt to the new items and weapons you're given. If you're naturally good at shooters on pc then this game will feel like butter with it's fire arms. (Funny side note: The basic crossbow bolts have this amazing rag-doll effect on normal enemies, I highly recommend leveling that weapon up, especially the normal bolts which when all the way maxed out have a cool effect with them!)
The directional keys can sometimes (rarely when you're used to the walking cycle of your character.) act up, I find it only happens when you press too many keys at once and your character gets confused on where to go.
The sprint meter is a bitch, level that up quick!
Master stealth, it's a life savor!
This game runs wonderfully, graphics look great, and puzzles are an occurrence but I don't think they're hard so I hope you enjoy them! :)

DLC GAME-PLAY
In the 'Assignment' and 'The Consequence' you don't do a lot of shooting, it's more stealth based game-play, still has shooting though! It runs well, it's controls are the same as the base game but with a few additional elements to it. The third DLC, 'The Executioner', is fun to play. Big hammer, traps, charge attacks, and a few other weapons make it fun to play. It still runs smooth.
In any game mode (base game and dlc's) I have never had any graphical issues with this game in any form.

REPLAY-ABILITY
The base game has excellent replay-ability. After beating the game once you're given the option to restart the game from that same file with everything you have unlocked (it gives you a little gold medal in your saved game files, a white medal will appear by your total play time and you'll see how many times you've cleared the game on that file.) After beating the game once you unlock fun guns! For people that love achievement hunting, after beating the game once you unlock 'new game plus' which lets you start a game from any chapter. The last thing unlocked when you beat the game once is the model viewer, which offers fun info about the characters and lets you move the models around for fun.

DLC REPLAY-ABILITY
These have less replay-ability, the only things you can do within the 'The Assignment' and 'The Consequences' is achievement hunting and go into a 'harder difficulty' which doesn't change the enemies whatsoever, it only makes the rooms pitch black, meaning you'd only be able to navigate with the light in your hands.
'The Executioner' is worse replay-ability wise, the only thing you can do is leveling up and unlocking all the weapons. There are no other difficulties to choose from.

THE DIFFICULTIES

-Base Game-

Casual- Easy if you wanna do achievement hunting and thoroughly look into story!

Survival- Very balanced all around, enemies are more aware, ammo becomes kinda sparse, and burning bodies will become second hand nature for you.
Nightmare- This is how the game is meant to be played and it is tough as hell. Enemies are difficult to fight and are random with their patterns. They will ambush you if you aren't careful! Bosses make you wanna punch a wall, stealth play is your best friend, and enemy icons for alertness are gone! (For auto-aim users, there is no auto aim here!) On the the plus side you unlock the brass knuckles when you beat this mode (or Akumu) and that's fun!
Akumu- Nightmare + any damage the main character takes kills him INSTANTLY. (NO MATTER WHAT HEALTH UPGRADES YOU GIVE HIM!) Uncommon enemies come kick your ass sooner, if you detonate any kind of explosive/fire you will die right away.

-DLCS-
'The Assignment' and 'The Consequence' have an extra difficulty but it does not have make the enemies smarter or harder to fight, instead it covers each area you're in, in darkness, so it's just you and your flashlight! The only real replay-ability is for achievement hunting or finding extra songs for a soundtrack player you unlock when you beat the dlcs for the first time.
'The Executioner' dlc does not have another difficultly. And honestly there is no real replay-ability here. If you want to unlock all the weapons and go beat enemies down that's cool! But other than leveling up the weapons and unlocking them, that's it. There's nothing else here.

-CONTROVERSY-

There are three main 'controversies' that have come out with this game.
1. About how the team behind the game handled the main villain, specifically about his disability Burns over 90% of his body , which has effected his life immensely. People believe that the team shed a negative light towards people with the same disability. Personally, I don't see an issue here. His condition, after he receives it, is used as a direct plot device to show how his life changed drastically (which for many people with the same condition, it does!). Within notes and audio tapes you find the villain did not like how he looked, he did not feel it was 'the real him'; and for this character it makes sense when you know about the entire story of the game. I'm also sure the team meant no ill-will towards anyone with a similar disability.

2. The character models and honestly it's true and funny. The team didn't create character models for brief flash back scenes, so they reused ones they already had at hand, they didn't even bother trying to make them younger it's hilarious. It may confuse people, but I hope later on you're able to decipher it!

3. The ending of the base game. This is entirely up for your own personal interpretation; If you want to deep dive for everything and draw your own conclusion from that, awesome! If you're cool with just experiencing the story at face value, that's awesome too! It still has fans talking about the game to this day, and I think that's cool!

THANK YOU FOR READING! HAVE A GREAT DAY/NIGHT! <3
