The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy Review (𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐲 ☂)

𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠/𝐛𝐮𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠:
• This work will be the first TooKyoGames employees like Kodaka (Danganronpa, TRIBE NINE..), Uchikoshi (999, Ever17, Somnium Files), Masafumi Takada (banger musician you've heard in many works by TKG), & more, actually own. Yes, Kodaka has long since stopped receiving funds from Danganronpa, as he's stated several times. Although games like Rain Code were created under their new company after leaving Spike Chunsoft, they are still not actually owned by them. That's why Kodaka had zero control over (thankfully minor) changes that came with the Steam port of Rain Code "Plus". They're, genuinely, risking bankruptcy creating this game, so if you want to support their futures, this is how. Obviously that isn't a sole reason to buy/positively review a game. I'm just mentioning it in case you want to support them or had no idea and that's okay. If you hate the game, do you, I'm nobody haha. This is also why the game isn't planned to release on all console just yet, nor is it available initially in all languages. $ and tricky to get folks to translate a game this big. Extending on big:
• This game has a confirmed 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬. Kodaka wrote the "true" ending, while Uchikoshi was responsible for leading a team of writers to execute one of game's main selling points: branching routes leading to 99 alternate endings. Because there are so many endings, the combat isn't really about gaining a bunch of levels, as, with the title being as long as it is, that would be hilariously difficult to balance (I can see someone being surprised by this but hopefully they have fun). I bring this up because, while 100 Line is incredibly long (some Reviewers reported beating it at 133 hours), they have specified that, due to the way the title is written, it is okay to consider alternative paths as 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 true route. They are all, supposedly, rich endings that offer something that contrasts the other endings. They believe every player will find an ending they like. It apparently even extends into different genres like romance.
I'm someone who's obsessed with Mystery works in terms of games, books, & anime. I love werewolf/escape works even outside of these guys like Lost Dimension, Yokai Landlord, Gnosia, YTTD, to manga like Doubt/Judge/Secret, Talentless Nana, Tomodachi Game. LNs like Zeroth Maria.. I yap here to say that unless you're playing Among Us, or you grew up playing Mitadake/Misuterri/Death Note: Online in the early 2000s like myself, Mystery narratives often lack replay value. Even when they have branching paths, those tend to ultimately be what makes the main path longer. The fact that this game is so long is probably, for now, the second closest we'll get to a Mystery narrative we come back to a bunch for more Mysteries (I guess third now would be Umineko). This excludes TRIBE NINE, a Live Service game (the new update goes crazy) built on cities of death games.
I can see this title not being everyone's cup of tea, cause yeah, game length is a preference, but I wanted to highlight why this concept makes sense in a genre where, once you know the mystery, there's no mystery to come back to lol. It'd be more that this isn't for every gamer, rather than that it is an objective flaw. Now whether or not the pacing is done well to accommodate said game length is a different story. I just thought I'd add clarity in case anyone out of this sort of loop doesn't know the full picture. Don't get me wrong though, if the game ends up terrible I'd still flip this to negative lol. I want to believe it's not, and in their potential but I gotta be honest.
I'll update this to reflect my gameplay thoughts soon. I plan to pull a 24+ hour stream playing it here: https://youtube.com/@gloomistic?si=HDwKOJhOh05bJiBZ. I'm prioritizing Social Links with the Tomato-Girl (Durara). I find masked characters like her, Q (ZTL), K (ZE), Doubt series casts, ect, fun, but she also seems like a "haughty royal" which seems funny as shit. Yes, she can qualify for best girl even if she turns out to have no head or an alien/clone one.
Have fun playing! I've waited to play this for years. Super excited.
