Trail Out Review (XAV13R)
I was a massive fan of Flatout 2, never stopped playing it from when it was released till now. So this was a huge surprise to find!!
It's very playable, but needs a fair bit of work to live up to its potential and be timeless fun like its predecessors. In its current state the sound isn't very good between menus, crashes, boost/nos and engine sounds especially, when i play a driving game i want to feel the engine! i want to feel the boost, and a big way to achieve that is through sound as well as visuals which Flatout 2 exceeded in achieving, excellently, you'd hear the "wooosh" and the graphics would give off an effect like you where going into hyperspeed.
The soundtrack feels like its made by a teenager from 2005 which is okay because you can put your own music in apparently, although I'm searching around for the folder everywhere and can't find it.
The graphics feel like a mix of new and very old, I'm talking 2001 Time Crisis on SEGA. DLSS seems to make things much more early SEGA-like.
Glitching at the start of races and in cut scenes.
Controller support for PC. I have a Xbox one controller for my PC and in this game it mostly works fine except there's very little rumble action.
I'm running 32gb 3200mhz RAM in dual channel with an AMD Ryzen 5600X and an RTX4060Ti. I have a 650w Gold PSU and a 570x Tuf series mobo with a 980pro M.2 Drive as primary, and Evo SSD as secondary which is what I have Trail out installed on. I have all the latest drivers for DX on Windows 11 64bit.
Other than that, it's fun and pretty impressive in certain ways graphically. I'd still say Flatout 2 is more fun though, and the graphics in that game hold up really well in 2025
