Travellers Rest Review (Cactur)
TL/DR; I cannot recommend the game in it's current state. I will revisit it down the road and see if any progress has been made.
-----------------------------------------------
I've always had my eye on Travellers Rest, and since it went on sale I decided I would give it a try. It sounded like the perfect game for me - run an inn/tavern, build it up, have some fun. Cool right? Well another thing I want to add is that I've been more leery about Early Access games since I've been burned in the past. I looked at the reviews, and I looked at when the game first became available - which was 2020. Everything sounds good so far right? 3+ years the game should be in a good state right? That's why I decided purchase and start playing it.
At first the game starts out great. You build up your tavern, open up more crafting options, etc. I liked the serving food/drinks aspect because it feels like games such as Overcooked or PlateUp! (only a Lite version of them). It would be really fun if you had a big enough bar and a friend playing with you taking care of orders. You also can decorate your tavern to pass the time, which is also fun. There are also other things such as farm animals, and orders you can fill to occupy time. However being able to afford things like farm animals takes a while to make those features available/affordable to you.
Eventually the game-play loop of - get the ingredients, make them into a product, sell the product gets a little repetitive. So you start to explore the rest of the game/map that's available to you.
As you navigate the menus you can see some things will eventually be available - such as "Socials" and "Magic" but are currently locked away with a message of "Coming soon!". That's fine, it's an early access game right? So you start to explore the map. You find interesting people and locations and find yourself saying "That is cool, I wonder what's going on here, and when it will be available?". So you move on. You find more people/places that currently do nothing. You find pathways that are blocked by rubble/boulders/junk. That's fine, it's early access game right? Eventually you explore everywhere and talk to everyone. You ask yourself "I am probably missing something right?" You look on wikis, reddit, etc. Nope, you aren't missing anything. The game basically consists of making food/drinks, serving them, decorating your tavern, and a couple extra features here and there. That's it.
You may be thinking to yourself "But its an early access game!" which is what I thought too and cut it some slack before making my decision on how to post this review. However I thought after 3+ years of development there would be.....more.
Here are some of the things I'd personally like to see:
If a feature isn't available, don't expose it in the interface - i.e. Magic/Social
Make rocks movable/removable in main area
Flesh out the people you can interact with
Flesh out the various interesting areas
Get mail for interesting characters (Hey come visit me at X day and time!)
Make workers hire-able sooner (Maybe just lesser versions)
AND/OR make an option for more automation - like self-serving food/drinks or something?
Make some features that are advertised available (Like the cat bed, unless i missed it somewhere?)
Have a dog available as an option instead of just a cat (I'm allergic to cats irl)
Explain better how to make your pet happy. Still confused other than petting it?
Make expanding the tavern available immediately instead of progress locking it
Have some events earlier in the game - even if it is just some event to introduce you to a mechanic of the game, just for something interesting to happen.
Make better versions of tools - such as a shovel that can clear away larger squares of areas
Make crafting stations able to be built right next to each other - such as Smelter and Stone workshop not requiring a separate square area for each station.
Make it so that coasters ACTUALLY keep the tables clean. The flavor text says it does. Why doesn't it?????
Make customer satisfaction more noticeable. It's super annoying to find out that I missed a tiny icon letting me know it was cold, and everyone leaves with negative satisfaction. Make it flash or something?
Overall just make the player feel like they're working towards something instead of a grind towards.....???
That's about all I can think of at the moment. I think if the game gets finished it WILL be a fun game to play. Something along the lines of Stardew Valley except with an inn/tavern. From what I've read the game is supposed to be done around 2025. I'll revisit it then to see where it's at. However for me, there just isn't enough to keep me engaged in the game.
