Wanted: Dead Review (Daggeira)
EDIT: If the devs could drop some profile customisation content, that would be great. Give me a background for the Atomic Heart diner, or the Deaf Panther Club, or both. I know you have the means lol
Full disclosure: my roommate and I played this with a Switch controller and turned all the sensitivity settings up to 75, with the graphics slightly reduced. I've been reading that people found some of the keyboard controls problematic, so maybe use a controller instead of the keyboard & mouse.
As a fan of old-school Capcom games like Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, we LOVED this. It's stressful at times due to some instability in the game registering inputs (and because of Cortez throwing grenades into small hallways with propane tanks in the last chapter), but it was still a great time.
Having a nonverbal character was a pretty cool change, as was including Stone's lactose intolerance. The more you watch Herzog's behaviour, the more your realize that he is the sweetest, most overprotective older brother type and he's charming as hell once you get used to him. Doc is kind of annoying for reasons unbeknownst to us, but I guess it's good to have a medic in the party. I don't think the other reviewers even know what bad voice acting sounds like, because it's perfectly fine and actually sounds MORE like natural speech to us than most games. (For reference, Sonic Adventure & the original Resident Evil are ACTUAL examples of bad voice acting. Hell, even the original Devil May Cry was oddly disjointed in comparison). We suspect people just aren't used to whatever brand of Scandinavian Stone's VA was lol
My only real gripes with the game is that cutscenes will spontaneously decide to mute everything but sound effects & playing music unlocked in the crane minigame from the menu completely breaks the sound engine and forces a restart to fix it. The parry system leaves a bit to be desired, but it's not a deal-breaker. There's also a small input delay in the ramen minigame, but we weren't here for minigames.
Overall, the game seems to have a bit of an issue knowing what it wants to be, but it's still fun af. I feel a little let down story-wise, but I'm pretty used to tings being cut from games to get them out by their release date (Soul Reaver, anyone?) so it's probably more of a failure of the development schedule than the game itself. This game absorbed several weeks of mine and my roommate's lives, but we have no regrets.
(Also, they render food really well. This game made us buy ramen TWICE.)
