Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Upheaval in Jingxiang Review (Fennrix)
I gave the other two dlcs a negative review and really did not like how Team Ninja handled DLC in this game in general. However, out of all three dlcs, I think this one is the best, for several reasons:
- Map variety: It felt like actually going through new zones and each map was very different from another
- New weapon: This dlc introduces the whip weapon type and comes with about 5-6 different looking versions. Whips are actually a lot of fun if you like fast hits and range
- Story: This is the only dlc that takes place after the base game and actually moves the story forward. You meet some characters from the base game again and learn more about them. But because being the only dlc after the main story, everything feels a little bit rushed, so I hoped we would get a fourth main mission in this one
- New item feature: You can now find additional items that allow you to gain new passive bonusses or limited active abilities for example a full heal in exchange for morale ranks - I think it is a neat addition and allows for even more creative builds
- Much more new enemies: Even though most of them are elemental reskins of existing enemies, every new enemy type feels much welcome in a game that lacks unique enemies
Now to the thing that I still did not like:
- Difficulty: While dlc 1 and dlc 2's difficulty was all over the place with super easy stages versus bosses that felt like they belong in NG+++, I think this one is not quite that harsh and boss 1 and 2 were surprisingly easy (that is: They felt like they ACTUALLY belong in NG and were OF COURSE no match for my level 150 character) but still fun well-made fights. The final boss of the DLC however ticked all the artificial difficulty boxes in once and is completely overtuned. Even though his "second phase", where he spams a lot of differen elemental boxes can be done, and one might say "this not THAT bad in comparison to the boss of DLC2, the real horror comes when you realize this boss has a whole second health bar and just spams projectiles and attack strings like crazy without actual openings in this phase. The boss also has a ton of health so even with the npc summon you get in that mission, he feels like a stupid bullet sponge that takes no damage at all. At this point I didn't even care, to be honest and once I got him to the second health bar a few times, I cheesed the hell out of the fight without shame, just to get it over with.
Overall an okay-ish DLC, but more pros than cons, so I might just give this one a thumbs up.
TLDR: If you don't own the season pass already and you are wondering which of the DLCs to buy: Get this one, it is the best of the three, but not without major flaws either.
