Mirthwood Review (hankypanky)

I gave it an honest try - and now I understand why the developers pushed the game back 2 months. It's just not ready, and is definitely more of an "early access" release than a full release. And the price tag is a tad high for the quality of gameplay. A few suggestions I haven't seen the other negative reviews (and the positive ones that say the game is bad...?):
1.) Make leveling skills more impactful. I got to a point where I had most skills at level 5, a decent ways in, and they made little to no difference. A 5% chance to get extra materials? When you can only mine maybe 10 nodes of the resource you need every 2-3 days? 5% damage increase on bows? I do 8 damage max per shot against enemies with over 100 HP, so that won't even show an increase until I can get a bow that does at least 10+ damage per shot.
2.) Settings - In a more casual game like this, allowing the user to set specific sound types to different levels is just a basic thing that should be available on an early access release. The music IS good in this game, and I do appreciate it, but - the problem with music in a game like this, is that it gets repetitive really fast when you are playing casually and farming in a specific area. It would be nice to turn it off for a bit if it starts to get repetitive - because it definitely does.
3.) Combat Height and HP Sponges - I don't think the combat is necessarily as bad as other people think in the reviews, but the height disparity issue and insane HP pools on enemies turn it into a frustrating slog. The height bug is extremely obvious when using ranged weapons and I can't imagine this was intended by devs - if I am on a hill and the enemy is on a lower terrain, you have to shoot at your "height level", AKA 5 feet above the enemy's head, to actually hit their hitbox and score damage. The same applies in melee combat, and is probably why players seem to think it's worse than I think it is - even a slight difference in height can require the player to aim at the enemy's feet or above their head (even in melee combat) to land a hit. I took to kiting enemies to an area with even ground for a more fun, fair fight - but it's just not possible in all areas.
4.) General Direction - this might be an issue caused by some other areas where the game falls short, but I'm not really "working" towards anything. Quests and trackers feel really disjointed and random. I think it would better to have longer term goals set as quests to achieve, and have them tied to NPCs and social development (see next #5 below).
5.) NPCs and Social - This is probably the biggest let down of all. The social system seems to have a lot of depth at first, until you realize (quickly) that NPCs are just a set of somewhat random and very general personality types, and not unique characters with any unique dialogue. A fair comparison would be if every Stardew characters still had liked and disliked gifts, but all said the same exact line when receiving a liked/disliked gift. I genuinely do think the idea behind the social approach and interaction menu is neat - with 5 different general types of interactions and 5 different "sub" interactions in each set. And characters with preferred and disliked types of interaction - but it's the ONLY thing that sets them apart.
6.) This last is one is obvious per other reviews, but I would remiss to not include it - the bugs. I have had 3 CTDs while fast travelling. Stuck multiple times in terrain and had to quit out and load an earlier save (pretty sure if I hit the save button, it would be game-breaking and I'd permanently be stuck on my save). Enemies have teleported, or just despawned randomly. I've been stunlocked by enemies teleporting and attacking far faster than they should. Game has stuttering and freezing issues on a high end PC regardless of settings.
If you are still considering buying this game, please do read through the positive reviews as well. I don't know what is going on there, but it's ridden with reviewers coming to the same conclusion I did (game is not ready/not worth the price tag), but still clicking the thumbs-up button for some reason. The result is that the review level on the surface at the moment is "mostly positive", but most of those "positive" reviews are pretty heavy critiques.
