Maneater: A brief review
Possibly like many people out there, I came to this game to look for a "shark eating things" game for P.C, because Hungry Shark World was way too much fun than it should have been. Did it satisfy me?
Graphically speaking, it's acceptable, but not something I would write home(or to other gamers) about. Think better than Assassin's Creed Black Flag, but less than A Plague Tale: Innocence. But it's well-defined, the objects are clearly realistic, and the shark itself is a marvel to look at. It's not bad to look at(the game), but not very impressive either.
Surprisingly, this game has a story. And like the graphics, I'm not much impressed by it, but only by the fact that it has one. It's quite enjoyable, I think. It's like watching a horror-comedy film from the perspective of a shark.
And not surprisingly, in this game, we play as a shark. Although different from Hungry Shark World, in which you progress and then jump on to the next shark, this game tied you to a specific one(hence the story mode). The game offers different customizations and abilities for your shark, and you also progress by leveling up your shark by consuming organic materials(although for a game titled "Maneater", eating a human is not that much fun; it's quite tedious). The game itself is a never-ending GTA-esque cathartic rampage, in which your trigger-happy-free shark swims through the water, jubilantly destroying/ consuming everything in its path(and is subjected to human punishment, as usual) while accompanied by the dry and transgressive comments by Nature television host. The swimming control is fun and easy to master, although the 360 degree angle camera is quite bad since it always trying to screw up your fight with superior prey or human watercraft).
And if doing all these things aren't good enough, then I think just being able to prowl in the blue ocean's water as a shark like in an aquarium is definitely an experience to be had.
Overall, "Maneater" is fun to play, and fun to immerse yourself in, but it's not perfect. It's good in a few aspects and quite lacking in several others. It's certainly a good shark game for consoles and P.C, although I think it's optimal to buy it on sale. What I want you to know is Shark game is quite a unique concept for a niche market, it's not a game for everyone since not everyone cares about sharks(while also a game for everyone at the same time due to its sheer stupidity and zany idea). If you think you like playing as a shark chomping things, go for it. I went for it and got what I wanted (a shark game). I like it and enjoy it. Certainly there is fun to be had.
Also, I think this is definitely a holiday game since you could just sink into it for a good couple of hours and then forget about it until the next play.
