For Honor Review (Shantari)
Ok base mechanics but horrifically bad balancing focused on the worst gamemode has lead to most of the 4v4 modes feeling like a grind against every single one of the most annoying strategies in existence, not helped by the dying playerbase and toxic community making it so that half the games you will be matched into will have either someone playing a character who can spam the same broken attack chain over and over to huge success or someone 10 times your level who can and will parry literally everything before hitting you with the most eye searing execution animation you've ever seen.
Despite having a wide variety of characters, you will pretty much only see the same 10 in any match because the others have either been nerfed into uselessness or never buffed once and thus fallen into the ditch that is power creep, and of those characters that are used are primarily either the very few still balanced characters or the ones that have light and heavy attack chains that are faster than just about any other animation in the game, hit the areas around them so you can't dodge and have such a slim window to block/parry that getting caught in one may as well be an instant kill.
Speaking of parries, you are required to get incredibly good at them if you want to even slightly succeed at the game, because even in brawls those absurdly long chain attacks only need a single successful hit to begin, so if you don't get good at parrying you will always lose every single match. And of course, if you want to try and fight against other players at your skill range for practice? Good luck! because Ubisoft's matchmaking is so terrible that you are guaranteed to end up fighting someone with waaay more experience than you for no reason, and the few times you come across other people who are ostensibly at your skill level, at least a third of them will be smurf accounts.
This all tied together with the fact that the playerbase is dying and everyone knows it, so people will happily cheat, smurf, go afk in the middle of matches while still moving enough to not get kicked, etc purely because no one actually cares about the consequences. I honestly believe the only reason ubisoft is still running the servers for the game is because they can keep cranking out barely playtested characters and overpriced cosmetics to keep raking in money. The animations are misleading, the characters unbalanced, the number of active players practically dropping by the second, and yet ubisoft will happily ignore those glaring issues just because they don't need to fix them to get people to buy more stuff.
If you are a new player looking for a medieval based game with interesting combat, go play mordhau or something, because this game long abandoned what it used to be about and is only getting worse as time goes on. The only reason I came back to this recently is because a friend asked me to reinstall it to play a few games with him, and as I've gone through some of the characters, both new and old, and played a wide range of matches, all I've found is disappointment as the already mediocre game I used to know has degraded into something so much worse.
TL;DR Save your money or find a game that actually cares about its mechanics, because everything that made this game good no longer exists.
