Maneater Review (ReBoot)
I'm a sucker for all things underwater. I'm also very much into "Killerspiele" (which translates to "killer games" which German conservatives are translating as "everything an 80yo didn't grow up with") and here's a game putting you into the shoes, or well, finns, of a killer fish.
Speaking of "killer fish", at its heart, the game is an open-world ARPG: you kill stuff you can, you avoid stuff you can't until you grow big & badass enough to come back & bite that sucker. There's quests of the brand "go there" mixed up with "... and kill everything while you're at it". Would be lame AF for an RPG, is absolutely everdamn fine for an ARPG. Especially one with a rather engaging combat system which is rather unique in the genre.
Speaking of "killer fish", I had no idea how they're going to set a shark up as a protagonist and I gotta say, they did a fine job at that, as well as painting a shark-hunting human as an asshole.
Fondness of creature features not required.
... that was my original review. A couple hours later, I'm addending it:
My ARPG of the year. No kidding. The premise is awesome. I'm not even in it for the novelty (which it is), I love it for what it is! Said premise sits rock-stable on fluid animations & controls. That does A LOT for the feel of the game and by "a lot", I mean "it's bloody awesome". Finally, the combat's rather involved. Downing a high-level armored boss less with grind & more with nimble finger-fu feels soo good!
