Northgard: Hræsvelg, Clan of the Eagle Review (Lucinda)
Is this clan fun? Yup
Is it a clan all about exploration and little base building? No
That's the problem I have with this clan, as it's advertised as being more of a mobile clan, whilst you are more mobile than others in exploring the map, you still need to build as much as everyone else, this is because:
1: Resource piles, and where they are at
Problem 1 will lead to problem 2, however for now, let's focus on the resource piles. Having your scouts go out, explore and collect these vats of treasure is fantastic! Being able to open relic locations without having to colonise the land is a godsend, and something I really do enjoy, however... the problems start to arise when you realise, the only relic location you'll loot is most likely the one next to your base, as most relic locations spawn nearer the coast, so grabbing them across the map just isn't feasible, because the time you get there, the enemy probably already opened theirs. That's if they hadn't colonised the area, which also prevents you from getting your resource cache, because if there are any enemies, or in enemy territory, you are not allowed to open these caches. Fair, but it causes problem 2.
Problem 2: Obtaining the resources, and how it hurts your economy and gives your opponents an advantage
As mentioned previously, caches tend to be spread out the map, sometimes literally across the map, whilst I do play largest maps because I like my slow gameplay, getting to these caches is nigh impossible due to how much territory I'd have to get through, because the territory:
Has to be accessible by your war units, just because you've scouted that area, doesn't mean it's clear
It has to be clear of enemies, because you're not allowed to open these caches up unless it's clear
If it's across the map, you have to trek across the map in order to clear it up, whilst clearing up other naturally spawned/AI/Opponent enemies, which isn't worth the effort, even if you get small boons from clearing those zones.
Problem 2.5: So, how is that bad? It's fair to prevent you from having no economy, right?
It's good to find a balance of having the caches somewhat protected, to prevent early snowballs, however you still need military units, and you need to heal said military units. Having your hawks slowly heal your units is fantastic, but it would only work if you get an army early on... which means less economy, less food, happiness, krowns, etc. So, by the time you actually clear a path and clear the cache of enemies, you'd probably have earned more from just expanding normally. However, this isn't the worst part.
You might have noticed, I left out how this helps your enemies, unless you're something like the wolf clan, you've just cleared a section of the map, ripe for the picking for all your opponents. As a clan designed not to develop much, this means you are encouraged *NOT* to colonise the entire map, instead focusing on gathering resources around the map. Which means you've just cleared 3 tiles, getting to the cache, and the enemy can just laugh at swoop up the territory. I think this is the biggest problem, as having to already clear the zones, hampering your economy, and then getting at best, minor boons for what other clans can produce, along with having their own buffs, kinda is just... sad.
Do I have a solution?
No, not a good one, I'm no game balancer and I know I'm not smart enough to do so, but if I had an idea, I'd try out having something like the snake clan, where animals aren't bothered by your presence, especially with the reduction in fame income, I think it would be fair to allow you to search caches, even if there are wild animals in the area, however draugr, valkyries, etc would need to be cleared out, because let's be honest, a wolf isn't gonna give two hoots about some strange two legged dog moving stones around. I also believe they should lean more into the small area trope they're trying to push, making it so your buildings are X% more effective (Say, 20%), but as you colonise more zones, this buff slowly decreases, which might help offset their need for military currently.
Sorry for the ramble, it's just the Eagle Clan are in a bit of an unfortunate spot currently, I'm happy to take criticism as I know I'm definitely not the best at this game
TLDR: You're killing things for other people, an early army means no strong economy, and the Eagle Clan still need to expand like other clans, but they do have interesting concepts
