RPG Maker MV Review (Dr. Büni)
MV is a great engine, however it is advertised as working on Linux distributions, when in reality, it doesn't. So keep that in mind.
Edit:
Figured I should write a bit more. MV is pretty great indeed, and honestly, better than MZ. To make a RPG that stands out, and diverges significantly from the basic Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy formulas, you will most likely be using plugins. Plugins are encapsulated pieces of code writing by members of the RPG Maker community. If you use or have used Gdevelop, they are like extensions, or... addons for Godot Engine, I think they are called.
Now, plugins existed before MV (in the form of scripts) and they exist for MZ, only the monetization of plugins for MZ is abhorrent. I get programmers have to earn their money, but it is just too expensive. Not only that, but the programmers - and I am talking about the Visustella team - obfuscated the code of the plugins, making it impossible for costumers to make edits to the plugins, which is a very important thing when you have dozens of plugins installed, often by different people, and bugs occur (sometimes, game breaking bugs).
MV plugins are also monetized, but they are significantly cheaper. Also, the plugins are not obfuscated, so you can fix bugs or ask for someone to help you fix bugs.
Putting plugins aside, MZ just isn't a significant upgrade over MV. It is a bit fancier, but for the asking price, it is a joke that the devs behind RPG Maker decided to release it.
MV is still the best "modern" version of RPG Maker, if you are on Windows. If you are on Linux, just try out a different engine. Something like Gdevelop or Construct 3 for general purposes, Ren'Py for visual novels and so on. Gamemaker Studio is a bit shady, but one of the relatively speaking easiest engines to learn, if you don't want visual script.
Or join the Godot cult.
